Great
Danes and Kids - Good Pets?
|
| |
| |
Q: Are
Great Danes good with children?
Answer: They are good with everyone. The size of the Danes is
very intimidating and creates a lot of misjudgments about them. They
are one of the most friendly breeds in existence. Even with small
children, Danes take great care around them. The most dangerous
thing about a Dane is its tail, it can clear an end table in a
second! For pictures of a Dane and a baby, see Danes
& Kids. |

Q: A
male or female - a better family pet?
Answer: I see no difference if it is a single dog home.
Sometimes it is not good to have two males especially if one or both
are an Alpha male. The same situation exists for two females, if
they are dominant. In a two dog home, I would suggest one of each,
but it's not to say two of the same sex would not work out. My own
choice was a male because , experience is that I find most females
to be more independent. Either way, male or female, they will love
you to death! |

Q: Do
Danes eat a lot?
Answer: As puppies, they eat more than most and continue to
do so through their rapid growth spurts. Their demands are different
due to the fact that they are a large breed of dog. I find that once
they reach maturity their intake is not much more than a shep or a
rottie. All dogs must be looked at differently because the
individual activity level of each is a factor in how much it eats.
The purchase of a puppy should not be based on how much does it eat.
It's like they said on buying a Cadillac, "How much gas does
it use?" If you can't afford the gas you can't afford the car! With
any breed of a puppy is is the same way, be prepared to cope with
the expenses of food and the required veterinary services. |

Q: Are
there many Health problems with Danes?
Answer: Most Danes are very healthy when they come from a
reliable breeder.
Bloat is a problem in Danes and is very quick when it happens. Once
a stomach twists there is very little time to save the Dane, but
surgery is successful if caught in time.
Cancer is also a problem in Danes, as in other breeds. It not seen
as a big problem.
The heart is used harder than medium sized dogs because it is the
same size as a medium size dog yet the Dane has twice the body mass. |

Q: What
is the Life Expectancy of Great Danes?
Answer: The national average at this time is 7 to 8 years.
Many Danes live to be as old as 11 and even 12 years old.
A lot of factors figure into the life span on an individual basis;
how the dog is raised, what the dog eats, the dogs activity level
allowed, and of course the stress levels obtained every day.
People must remember that a Dane has the same size heart as a normal
sized dog, yet it has twice the body size than the smaller breeds;
thus the heart automatically has to work twice as hard even under
normal every day conditions! |

Colors
and Personality |
| |
| |
Q: What
Colors do Danes come in?
Answer: I put Danes in three color groups:
- Fawns and Brindles
- Fawns are tan colored like a deer.
Brindles are carmel like the tiger stripes in tan.
- Blacks and Blues
- The blues are steel gray in color and blacks are just
that!
- Harlequins
- Harlequins are white with torn black patches. Other colors
that come from harlequin breeding are Mantles.
- Merles are white and occasionally black or black &
white.

Q: Does
Color Make any Difference in Their Personality?
Answer: My own experience is that they all are about the same
with one exception in the Harlequin bred colors. They are in a world
of their own. Like the term, antsy, they have to be the first in the
van, the first out the door and they can dance in place better than
any half-time marching band you will ever see! This doesn't give
them a bad quality or personality though as they are every bit as
lovable and dedicated to their families as the rest. |

Q: Are
they Smarter than your Average Dog!
Answer: Someone did an independent study on K9 intelligence
and I browsed the article a few years ago. They ranked Danes in
49'th position of most intelligent of 138 breeds at that time. My
own biased opinion is that they are smarter than what the study
indicates, but that's one mans' opinion. I do know that several of
the puppies I have placed over the years have done very well and
excelled in Puppy Kinder garden Classes, Basic and Advanced
Obedience Classes, and as Pet Therapy Dogs. They are very trainable! |

Q: Do
Danes Make Friends Easily?
Answer: They seem to be fine with other pets including dogs
and cats. It is best if the introduction is while they are a puppy
rather than an older dog. Usually, if there are any problems they
work it out in a playful fashion rather than an aggressive one. My
two cats get along fine with the Danes, it didn't happen overnight.
It did get to the point where the cats actually curl up and sleep
with the Danes, usually right across the paws. Always make the
introduction of pets to each other a slow process and under your
supervision to insure safety as there are cases when they will hate
each other and fight! You just don't know for sure till you try it.

Jade (the Dane) made friends with Billy, a lost goat and shared a
meal with him. You just never know what can happen!

Q: Can
a Dane Live in an Apartment?
Answer: An Apartment is no different than any other home
except that there is no yard to romp and run in. Danes do live in
apartments but with owners that take the time to give their dog
plenty of exercise through walks and visits to the park. I
personally know a Dane that lives on Park Avenue in New York, across
from Central Park. They live on the 15'th floor and have the most
wonderful home and daily activity schedule. The size of the home is
less important than the availability to walk and exercise outdoors.
Please, be 'Good Neighbors' and clean up after your pet! |

Cropped
Ears |
| |
| |
Q: Do
the Ears Have to be Cropped?
Answer: They don't have to be cropped, but most Danes are
cropped. It is an individuals own decision when it comes to cropping
the ears. Personally I have only had a few requests for uncropped
natural ears. Most folks want them to look like a Dane and not an
overgrown Lab. |
