The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water, and warm spring weather. Those old and frail animals are young again. Those who have been maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other. But there is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up. The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one suddenly runs from the group. You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

"Lucky"

The two above pictures of Lucky were taken the day before he died, he was a handsome, proud Dane right up to the end. Lucky was my very first Dane and was the nicest Dane I have ever had.
As a puppy in the 9 to 12 month old class National Specialty week in 1993 from 5 shows he took two 2nds and a 3rd in his class competing against the very best with 13 to 17 danes in each of the classes.
Lucky was never sick and never had a health problem his entire life but 6 months before he died he slowed down and had difficulty getting up and down as his systems started to fail him, all this after 10 years.
On the morning of 13 May it was like he waited for me to get up so he could tell me Good-Bye. When I came out to the living room he was laying on the floor breathing heavily and I knew then he was leaving me. I sat on the floor beside him, talking to him as he nuzzled me and told him of all the happiness he brought into my life and into the lives of the many friends he had made over the years.
Lucky and I both had tears in our eyes, this went on for 15 minutes and he died, he left me and I never felt so much pain before over anything, he had been the best friend I ever had in my life human or canine.
He went with me every place I went, he knew the Bank the best as they always had bonies for him. He went to work with me when I was on night shift and even on weekends depending which location I was scheduled for.
Lucky was not used for stud until he was 6 years old but could he produce, all the very nice sons and daughters he left behind are a credit to the Dane he was. He now has great-grandkids. My biggest thrill came from the fact that the Breeder I got Lucky from, Dr. Elaine Miller came back to me to use his stud services on a few occasions to keep the excellent qualities in her lines, taking him out of retirement at 8 years old he produced a litter of 11 for her.
Although its now been 6 months since Lucky passed I could not and still can't bring myself to accept the fact that he is gone and I have not been able to write up his obituary tribute until now but he deserves this Honor. He named my kennel, Black Knight Danes, derived from his name Lucky Black Knight, his father, a Blue was Elaine Miller's Apollo Blue Knight.
Lucky, you are gone but will never be forgotten for as I told you when you crossed the Rainbow Bridge, we will meet again and I look forward to that day when you see me and come running to me for I miss you and love you dearly. Thank you for all the happiness you brought into my life, you alone brought my love for the breed into being and you are the Best there ever was or will be.
Your with your friends now that you knew well and romped with over the years, older than all of them yet all left before you did.
A special thanks to you from your Blue son Max, Black grandson Lance and great grandson a Blue, Rex, 10 weeks old, all three are a carbon of you in so many ways. I miss you so much.

Love Dad
